A Chinese woman on a holiday was devastated after she watched her flatmate beating and kicking her pet cat for over an hour through a live home surveillance camera.

The pet owner took to microblogging website Weibo on Thursday to share the CCTV footage of the incident. The woman said she was on a holiday on April 27 when she decided to check the live footage to see how her cat was doing. She suddenly heard her cat, a British Shorthair, whining for help and her flatmate kicking it.

“My female flatmate kicked my cat as if she had been doing a penalty kick. She beat the little cat which was not able to fight back for dozens of times,” the owner said.

The unidentified woman said her flatmate, named Dong, then lifted the cat by its tail for several minutes before locking it in its cage. She then blocked the cage using the furniture and covered it completely using pillows. A while later, Dong picked up the cat and put it on the sofa before squeezing its neck.

The owner said she was in tears as she heard her pet screaming. She, however, immediately called Dong who did not answer the call. The woman said Dong had punished the cat for urinating on her bed and that she had also refused to apologize. She also added that Dong, her only roommate, had agreed to keep the pet when she moved in to the apartment.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) condemned the incident.

“If there is a conflict, one should communicate with the owner of the animal sensibly. Abusing animal is wrong at all times,” a spokesperson of the organization told the Daily Mail.

The post went viral in China and was shared over 110,000 times. Dong too reportedly apologized following the outcry and has also offered to cover the cat’s medical bills.
