The Catch” was canceled by ABC after two seasons just hours after the finale episode for Season 2 aired.

In “The Mockingbird,” it was surprisingly revealed that Alice’s (Mireille Enos) brother, Tommy (T.R. Knight) is not the real Mockingbird. Instead, it was Rhys (John Simm). While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Allan Heinberg initially shared his plans for Season 3 had the series had been picked up.

“Getting Ben and Rhys back together is going to take a number of episodes in Season 3, and their relationship is never going to be the same. When we meet Rhys in Season 3, he’s in an even more different power dynamic; he’s even more powerful than he was at the end of Season 2. It’s not going to be easy to take Rhys down by any means… Of course, going into Season 3, all Rhys wants to do is to make everything okay with Ben and Alice,” he said.

“The Catch” Season 2, episode 10 also ended with Ben (Peter Krause), Margot (Sonya Walger) and Tessa (Philippa Coulthard) going on the run. Alice was left behind with her ex-boyfriend, Ethan (Warren Christie). According to Heinberg, if Season 3 was renewed, it would’ve reset the entire series. “Season 3 resets the entire show and reframes all the conflicts and all the relationships in the same way that Season 2 did. It’s a brand new show when we come back, or if we come back,” he said.

However, Heinberg’s plans did not materialize on ABC. In fact, a similar thing already happened at the end of Season 1. At that time, “The Catch” wasn’t well-embraced by the audiences even though executive producer Shonda Rhimes was involved in the project. As a result, Heinberg said they decided to make the episodes from Season 2 more fun compared to the installments from Season 1. This major change still didn’t help boost the ratings for Season 2.

Meanwhile, Heinberg also opened up about Ben and Margot’s daughter, Tessa, and what would’ve happened to her in Season 3. According to the exec, Tessa would have been given more storylines in the upcoming episodes. “Well, she’s Margot’s daughter. She comes to this genetically and by trade, so I think it’s the same with Margot, and to a certain degree Ben, too – she’s a survivor… The nice thing about Margot and Tessa is they are being honest with you most of the time about who they are and what they want, but whether or not they’re on your side is always going to be up for question,” he said.

In other news, another interesting story arc that would’ve taken center stage in Season 3 has to do with Margot and Danny’s (Jay Hayden) relationship. To everyone’s surprise, Margot revealed in the finale that she’s is not just using Danny to do her dirty work. Rather, she’s madly in love with him, but Danny chose to stay loyal to Alice instead of running after Margot.

“The Catch” Season 2 aired its final episode on May 11 at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
