Chris Evans has addressed the speculation about his potential return as Steve Rogers in "Captain America 4."

On Saturday, the 41-year-old actor responded to a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter about the fourth installment of the "Captain America" film franchise for Marvel Studios, which said: "It is unclear if Chris Evans would reprise his role as the first Captain America."

While he didn't directly deny speculation that he'd make an appearance in the upcoming film, Evans confirmed that Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America.

"Sam Wilson is Captain America," Evans replied.

Anthony Mackie made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, in the 2014 movie "Captain: America: The Winter Soldier." He returned in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," which concluded with Steve handing over his Captain America shield to Sam.

Marvel's 2021 Disney+ series "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" then saw Sam, after much self-doubt, finally accept the shield and mantle of Captain America.

Mackie will star in the upcoming "Captain America 4" movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which reported that he will reprise his role as Sam but not Falcon.

Twitter users had mixed reactions to Evans' response to the speculation.

"Sam Wilson is our Falcon. To me, YOU are our Captain America.," one fan commented.

"I see what you’re saying, Chris. But Sam Wilson, as awesome as he is, cannot replace Steve Rogers. He can only succeed him," another fan wrote. "No one can fill Steve’s shoes. And no one can replace YOU as Steve Rogers."

But another user argued: "Imagine thinking they are trying to replace Steve when he was Sam's best friend and did nothing but lift him up. It's so annoying. They can't even understand what this story is about."

One person questioned the fans who made up "fake scenarios" that only upset them. "No one’s replacing Steve. He gave Sam the mantle and he’s making his own mark on it and that should be the end of it," the netizen added.

Evans, who last appeared in the MCU in "Endgame," recently said that a return would be "a tall order."

"That seems to be something people would like to see," he told ComicBook in June of rumors he could reprise his role as Steve Rogers. "I don't want to disappoint anybody but it's tough to … It was such a good run and I'm so happy with it. It's so precious to me. It would have to be perfect. It just would be scary to rattle something that is, again, so, so dear to me. That role means so much to me. So, to revisit it, it would be a tall order."

Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah is set to direct "Captain America 4," according to THR. Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, who both worked on "Winter Soldier," penned the script.

No start date has been revealed. Marvel Studios also has not announced a release date yet for the upcoming superhero flick.
