Coronavirus USA: Cases, Death Toll After Third Day In A Row Of Record Cases

The number of daily COVID-19 cases surpassed 60,000 for the third day in a row on Saturday, as the U.S continues to have the most infections in the world. As of 9:45 a.m. ET on Sunday, there are 3,247,782 coronavirus cases in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University, with the domestic death toll at 134,817.

The hardest hit states include Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. Florida saw an additional 10,360 cases and 98 deaths on Saturday, with Gov. Ron DeSantis saying he would not reopen bars in the state anytime soon. DeSantis, an ally of President Trump, has pushed for Florida schools to reopen in the fall, while Disney has begun to reopen its theme parks in the state.

On Saturday, Texas saw a record high 10,351 cases. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has warned residents that the state could undergo another economic lockdown if people continue to flout the state’s mask mandate.

The Arizona health department reported 3,038 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 69 additional deaths. GOP Gov. Doug Ducey has ordered restaurants to restrict occupancy to 50%. Ducey has also said that shipments of the antiviral drug remdesivir would arrive in Arizona. The drug reportedly reduces the chances of death from the virus.

California saw 7,798 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. Indoor dining and bars have been shut down in counties across the state.

On Saturday, President Trump appeared in public with a mask for the first time during a visit to Walter Reed National Medical Military Center. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and a top member of Trump’s coronavirus task force, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has said it is possible the U.S. could see 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day.
