"Death Stranding" studio Kojima Productions, lead by Hideo Kojima, is looking to create movies in the future.

Kojima revealed to BBC Newsbeat, as part of an interview for its "Death Stranding" documentary, that films were definitely in the cards.

"In the future Kojima Productions will start making films," Kojima revealed. "If you can do one thing well, then you can do everything well." Kojima has long been a proponent of cinema and grew up a massive fan of movies himself.

With artful creations like "Death Stranding" and "Metal Gear Solid" before it, his games have steadily approached the threshold of "gaming meets movies" over the years. It makes total sense that he'd be looking for a change – especially since he believes movies, games, and TV shows will begin converging in ways we haven't seen before, likely due to the prevalence and simplicity of streaming technology.

"I’m very interested in the new format of game that will appear on there and that’s what I want to take on," Kojima noted during the interview. Right now, it certainly seems that he's well on his way. He's already worked with notable movie and TV stars like Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn for his latest title.

"This game is, to start with, like Guillermo del Toro told me, not a way to break out, but to make something that the fans expect,” he said. “There are new elements to the game but the basis is something people are used to playing.”

Of course, Kojima didn't entertain any ideas about when he might decide to tackle this new frontier. It's on his radar, but that doesn't mean he's about to abandon video games anytime soon. What will likely happen is that he will end up producing film content or companion materials after debuting "Death Stranding" and pivot to his next project so as not to lose momentum, especially with PlayStation. However, a cinematic horror experience in the vein of games like "Until Dawn" would certainly be an interesting move for him.
