A California sheriff's deputy is heaping praises of thanks after he saved an 11-month-old boy after choking on a coin amid an ongoing demonstration. A Fox News report says the deputy had been monitoring a demonstration last month when his attention was called by one of the two women accompanying the boy.

Jumping Into Action

Deputy Cameron Kinsey of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said he was there to monitor a demonstration on May 31 and to ensure that participants maintain a peaceful protest rally. Suddenly, a woman called his attention and asked for help as the toddler they were with has swallowed a coin and appeared to be not breathing. Without hesitation, Deputy Kinsey sprang into action to see what he can do to save the boy.

A security camera happened to capture the moments as they unfold. The LA County Sheriff’s Department released a copy of the two-minute surveillance video. It shows two women frantically running carrying a limp child through a parking lot of a supermarket trying to find help.

A Higher Call

As the mother of the toddler stopped to pat her baby’s back, her companion flagged down Kinsey, who was keenly observing the protest rally at the time. The deputy did not think twice and immediately went to the mother and the troubled toddler. As for the protest he was monitoring, Kinsey, in a statement, said, “None of that other stuff matters, just the baby.”

Upon reaching the mother and her baby, the deputy assessed the situation and used his finger to conduct a “mouth sweep.” He also cleared any traces of vomit from the mouth of the toddler. After delivering a couple of blows to the back of the toddler, the boy started to breathe again. It was at this precise moment that paramedics arrived and immediately brought the boy to a hospital.

Coin Blocked The Toddler’s Airway

Sheriff’s department officials later revealed that the coin that the toddler swallowed blocked his airway. They added that the quick action of Deputy Kinsey turned the coin sideways, allowing the boy to breathe again. The deputy, however, is not claiming full credit and also heaped praise on the child’s mother for her prompt action.

In an interview with Antelope Valley Press, Kinsey said, “Mom did the right thing. She was quick-thinking and started patting him on the back to dislodge whatever he had stuck in there. I saw that. I saw she was scared and kind of frantic, so I ran over and I grabbed the baby. At that point, training just took over.”
