  • Cops found the remains during a wellness check after a tenant said they hadn't seen the woman
  • The suspect hired a tow truck driver to transport a large plastic bag outside the residence
  • Bloodied towels and rags were found inside a garbage can on Foster Beach

The report of a missing woman led Chicago police to find human remains inside a freezer at the woman's apartment.

The grim discovery was made after a tenant of the West Ridge boarding house reported the landlord missing. Police conducted a wellness check and arrived at the missing woman's apartment to find the remains Monday night.

Investigators believe the remains belong to the landlord, who was renting out rooms at the house to tenants, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

"They eventually discovered human remains in a freezer, at which point we backed out of the residence to secure a search warrant to go back in and retrieve all evidence properly," said Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan.

Cops said the suspect was a female tenant who was feared by other residents living at the boarding house.

The suspect allegedly hired a tow truck and was seen transporting a heavy plastic garbage bag to Foster Beach. Cops found bloodied towels and rags inside a garbage can at the location along with more remains, which were not human.

"The tow truck driver explained that individual pulled a knife on him, so officers responded to that scene and placed that suspect into custody," Deenihan said.

The driver reportedly told cops he had no idea the woman riding in his truck was possibly involved in a murder. Cops told him that a "human head" was found in the landlord's freezer, the driver added.

The suspected woman was taken into custody for the knife incident but declined to speak about the remains found at the boarding house, NBC Chicago reported.

"We have a long way to go, but obviously we believe that the missing person is ... unfortunately the individual we discovered," Deenihan added.

Neighbor Phoebe Salzmann said she saw the strange sight of a woman lugging what appeared to be a heavy plastic bag outside the house before the remains were found in the freezer.

"I was an eyewitness," Salzmann said, according to CBS News. "Like, I think I saw something going down."

"I thought it was strange, because I thought, 'Why is she coming out of the house towards the street when her trash can is in the back?'" Salzmann added. "And I recall also like, the woman was wearing a black puffy coat, and I thought, it's weird – it's 70 degrees outside."

"It's horrible. It just sends chills down my spine," Salzmann said, as quoted by NBC Chicago.

Andy, a neighbor who lives near the boarding house, told the outlet, "There's never been any issues in this neighborhood before."
