A missing 5-year-old boy in the Indian state of West Bengal was found dead at his neighbor's home, authorities said.

The child's body was discovered Tuesday inside a plastic bag on the roof of the residence located in Birbhum district, the newspaper the Times of India reported, citing police.

The boy, who went missing from the village of Moldanga Sunday, was found after locals informed authorities of a foul smell, according to the outlet.

A mob then ransacked and torched the home of the boy's neighbor following the discovery, authorities said.

The deceased child's body was sent to the sub-divisional hospital in Bolpur for postmortem.

Meanwhile, the boy's neighbor, an unidentified woman, was arrested in connection to the discovery, Birbhum police superintendent Nagendra Nath Tripathi said.

Police had allegedly questioned her Monday.

The neighbor's connection to the boy's death was unclear.

Several police were reportedly deployed in the area after the child's body was found.

Residents of Moldanga have allegedly been on the edge ever since the minor went missing.

"The boy's family didn't suspect anyone," Tripathi said.

In a similar story, the decomposed remains of a woman were found inside a plastic bag at a New York City apartment in June.

Gilbert Legendre was cleaning the basement of his home in Queens' Laurelton neighborhood on June. 18 when he noticed a foul smell in the space.

The 65-year-old then found a plastic bag containing the decomposed remains of a person from a hole hidden behind a plywood board.

Investigators believed the deceased was the girlfriend of Legendre's 30-year-old son, Josh Legendre.

Josh's girlfriend had been missing for four months before the discovery.

Both Josh and his girlfriend had schizophrenia, police sources claimed.

Josh was arrested and taken into custody. He was charged with concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence.

The coroner examined the found remains to determine her cause of death, according to officials.

In the aftermath of the entire ordeal, Gilbert claimed he was "just trying to see if I can wrap my head around this."

"Right now I'm just still having problems analyzing it, you know?" he said.
