Firefighters were called in to rescue a dog and a cat who were stuck on a tree in Lathrop California last week.

The dog, a german shepherd, was in hot pursuit of a fuzzy black cat who climbed up a tree. The enthusiastic dog didn’t stop there and shot up the trunk of the tree to catch its rival.

However, the dog found itself in a spot of trouble when it was unable to climb down from the tree. He was stuck a few feet from the cat, unable to make a move.

When firefighters arrived, they were surprised to find that they were rescuing a dog along with the cat stuck in the tree, CNN reported. The Lathrop Manteca Fire District posted images about the ordeal on Facebook.

"You may have heard that our firefighters get cats out of trees, but what about dogs?!" the Facebook post said.

Photos show the dog trying to get closer to the cat, as the firefighters prepared a ladder. Using the ladder they were able to get the stranded dog down from the tree.

"Glad to hear that all turned out well for this pooch, and we are all pretty sure he'll think twice about chasing cats up the next tree...nice work Engine 35," the fire department wrote on the Facebook post.

The incident amused many and the post managed to get over 4000 likes and 5000 shares. The firefighters even took a photo with the dog post its rescue.

However, there was no mention about the cat in the initial post made by the fire department and the cat lovers would have none of it. After receiving numerous messages asking about the well being of the cat, the fire department was forced to put up an update on the post.

“We have received word that both cat and dog are doing well! While we don’t typically update or respond to comments, after seeing so much interest for the cats well being we felt we had a responsibility to share the news,” they said on the post.

The cat had jumped out of the tree while the dog was being rescued.
