In a case of animal cruelty, a dog was severely wounded after a woman attacked the canine with an axe in an inebriated state. The incident took place in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Wednesday.

The unidentified woman walked out of her home armed with an axe and attacked the dog with it, leaving locals outraged.

“It is a senior community dog and has been a part of our lives from past 13 years. The woman has attacked and killed dogs in the past as well. The entire colony was shocked to see her try to kill the dog with an axe,” said Cheguri Saikrishna, a resident, told local daily the Times of India.

“This woman has become a threat to the entire colony. People are scared that she might attack their children in the same manner,” the resident added.

The locals rushed the canine to a nearby animal hospital with several wounds to its body. It received six external stitches and five stitches to the internal organs.

Meanwhile, Pravalika, the founder of the animal welfare organization Compassionate Society for Animals (CSA), filed a police complaint following which a case of mischief by killing or maiming cattle was registered.

“The dog had received serious injuries in the attack and we have shifted it to the government veterinary hospital for treatment. We also visited LB Nagar police station and lodged a complaint requesting the police officials to take strict action against those who are responsible for the attack,” said Pravalika.

“The cuts were so deep that the animal’s internal organs were also injured. Such people are dangerous to the community,” she added.
