  • Elon Musk reinstated Donald Trump's Twitter account after a poll showed that most users wanted him back
  • About 52% of the 15 million users who participated in Musk's poll voted to allow Trump to return to the site
  • A ban had kept Trump off the social media platform for nearly two years

Former President Donald Trump's account on Twitter was reinstated Saturday, nearly two years after it was suspended.

Twitter banned Trump following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, citing "the risk of further incitement of violence."

However, new Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk lifted the ban after holding a poll Friday that asked Twitter users to click "yes" or "no" on whether Trump's account should be reinstated.

Of the 15 million users who participated in the poll, 51.8% voted "yes."

"The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei," Musk tweeted, using a Latin phrase meaning "the voice of the people, the voice of God."

Shortly afterward, Trump's account, which earlier appeared as suspended, reappeared on the platform along with his nearly 60,000 tweets.

The reinstatement of Trump's account received mixed responses among Twitter users.

Many of Trump's supporters expressed joy over the former president's return to the site, with the words "he's back" trending shortly after his account was restored.

"@realDonaldTrump is back!!!! He's back!!!!" one wrote. Another added, "He's back on Twitter. Let the fun begin."

"It's been jumpy all night. So cool that he's back!" a third user commented.

"I'm glad he's back," another tweeted.

"Oh no, I'm not triggered that Trump's back, but it seems a handful of people are triggered that he's back. Which I think it's funny!" a fifth user added.

Others, however, were upset about the decision to allow Trump to tweet again. The hashtags for "block Trump" and "blocked" trended on the same day.

"Trump is a malignant narcissist and you are his source of supply. I blocked that s--t flinging gibbon," one tweeted.

"Trump used Twitter to incite an insurrection. Yet he's back? WTAF!!! I wish Stephen King bought Twitter instead of Elon Musk. Guess the s--tshow is back! Or maybe not. Trump might not want to do anything to make Truth Social look any more useless than it already does," another added.

"Trump has no relevancy if we don't give them any. We have the power, not him," a third user wrote.

"'Block Trump.' I just did. Anyone else #BlockTrump too? Let's put this baby in the corner for a permanent time out," another person said.

"That's the best way to hurt Trump or any narcissist, ignore them. So he will be on my block list immediately," a fifth user added.

Others pointed out that it may not be necessary to block Trump because the former president previously said that he would remain on his platform, Truth Social, instead of rejoining Twitter even if his account is reinstated.

On Saturday, in his speech at a Republican Jewish group meeting in Las Vegas, Trump acknowledged that he was aware of Musk's poll about reinstating his account but claimed that he saw "a lot of problems" with Twitter.

"I hear we're getting a big vote to also go back on Twitter. I don't see it because I don't see any reason for it," Trump said, Bloomberg reported.

"It may make it, it may not make it," he added, apparently referring to Twitter's recent internal issues.

Trump lost his access to Twitter two days after his supporters stormed the Capitol, soon after the former president had exhorted them to "fight like hell" as Congress was poised to certify President Joe Biden's election victory.

"After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter said in a statement at the time, CNN reported. "In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action."

Trump was also kicked off Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. His YouTube channel was suspended. Facebook is set to reconsider his account suspension in January, CBS News reported.
