E-waste

Maybe buying a new phone every year isn't such a great idea.

A recent study conducted by a team of scientists explored the adverse effects that certain e-waste (or electronic waste) components have on humans. And what they found out was disturbing.

As in turned out, a lot of the gadgets, such as mobile phones and computer parts, we throw away contain some pretty harmful stuff. The researchers recorded plausible outcomes associated with exposure to e-waste including changes in thyroid function, changes in cellular expression and function, adverse neonatal outcomes, changes in temperament and behavior and decreased lung functions.

What is E-waste?

E-waste is a broad classification used to describe electronic devices that have reached the end-of-life stage of their life cycle.

While most of this waste is from truly “dead” components that have no further use, a large portion of today’s e-waste is actually comprised of fully-functioning, salvageable products. The reason why a lot of people simply throw away their old devices is that technology has simply progressed to a culture of fast replacement.

While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, we can certainly help the planet by being more conscious about the way we view and use our devices. Our aim is to inform you about certain services that you can use to help reduce the impacts of e-waste on the environment (as well as saving you a few bucks in the process).

Refurbishing sites aren’t a new concept. A lot of them have been around for a long time in the form of brick-and-mortar mom and pop shops. However, as our society moves into an ever-increasingly online culture, a lot of refurbishing shops have recently started to sell their wares on online shops not too different from Amazon.

It’s high time that we start thinking more about the environment and how we can preserve it. We strongly believe that supporting the refurbishing industry will only serve to reinforce a stronger mentality that promotes responsible spending and resource management -- and who wouldn’t want to get great devices at cheaper prices, right?

Their selections are varied and are all capable of handling any school or work tasks you throw at them. One of our top picks on their site is the Lenovo ThinkPad X250 since the school year has already begun and distanced learning is kind of a big deal right now. It's got plenty of horsepower and comes at a drastically lower price than it's MSRP.

For all you remote workers out there, don't think we've forgotten about you. Another great deal we've found on the site is the HP ProDesk 600 G1 which is a fully-capable machine for any spreadsheet or other work you might have.
