Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. For years, environmentally active celebrities have been using their power, influence, and resources to try to make positive environmental impacts. In addition to advocating for things like recycling and reduction in plastic use, some celebs have transformed their entire diets to a more sustainable one.

Some celebrities, like Miley Cyrus, Natalie Portman, Jenna Dewan, and Ariana Grande, have been outspoken about their veganism for years. But here are five celebrities whose vegan diets might come as a surprise in honor of Earth Day 2020.

Ellen Pompeo

Television’s most famous doctor changed her family’s entire lifestyle after one conversation. The “Grey’s Anatomy” star said the change was spurred by her 2018 yearly check-up, People reported.

“Since then my whole family has gone completely vegan,” she said.

The 50-year-old actor is a mother of three to Stella Luna (10), Sienna May (5), and Eli Christopher (3), whom she shares with husband Chris Ivery.

Brad Pitt

While the “Fight Club” star has been a vegetarian for years, according to Daily Mail, it’s rumored that in recent years he’s been adjusting to a completely vegan diet. The 56-year-old actor and father of six made headlines earlier this year when he complimented the vegan food served at the Golden Globes in January, The Washington Post reported.

“I’m all for the vegan thing,” he said at the time.

Taraji P. Henson

The “Empire” star made the switch to a plant-based diet back in summer 2018 after a doctor told her the stomach pains she was having were because of her eating habits.

“I said, ‘Say no more,’” Henson told InStyle in 2018. “So I switched everything up out of necessity. I want to live. Thank God, because I feel so much better.”

Venus Williams

The tennis player adopted a vegan diet in 2018 after receiving a recommendation from her doctor to do so in order to help ease the symptoms of Sjögren’s syndrome, VeganLife reported. However, Williams told Insider in 2019 that because of health concerns, she had to adjust her initially raw vegan diet (comprised of plant-based foods that are never cooked above a specific temperature) to include potatoes and lentils as well.

Zac Efron

Efron, known for his roles as a heart-throb, frat boy, or all-around muscle man, is vegan. The “Baywatch” star revealed to Teen Vogue in 2018 that when he first began “experimenting” with veganism it “completely changed the way” his body works.

“It's been brilliant,” he said. “It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”
