Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. was hit with a major outage on Wednesday, which coincidentally is Earth Day, leaving users unable to access their e-mail or any Web pages hosted by the company.

The outage occurred early Wednesday morning knocking out Earthlink servers, web pages, phones and email/twitter accounts.

EarthLink users first started reporting problems with their e-mail accounts on Twitter at around 10:30 a.m. E.T.

The Atlanta-based company has an estimated 2.8 million subscribers in the U.S.

Inquiries to the company's public relations department were not immediately returned.
