Ed Sheeran’s cameo in “Game of Thrones” Season 7 was not as well-received as the singer hoped.

On Sunday, Sheeran made his TV debut in the premiere episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 7. The singer’s short stint in the hit HBO series had his character singing a few lines and having a short exchange with Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).

According to CNN, Sheeran’s performance in “Game of Thrones” received mixed reactions from viewers. Some praised the “Thinking Out Loud” singer’s acting skills, while there were some who were not impressed.

This later sparked speculations that the negative feedback prompted Sheeran to delete his Twitter account. Among those who made the connection was Mike Russell, who believes that the reaction to Sheeran’s “Game of Thrones” cameo was behind his decision to shut down his Twitter account. “Game of Thrones has now killed off Ed Sheeran’s Twitter,” he wrote.

Despite the criticism, Sheeran’s fans have stood by the crooner and even took to Twitter to defend him. “Just don’t understand how people can hate on Ed Sheeran so much to make him delete his twitter like sorry what he’s one of the nicest people,” Sophie wrote. Meanwhile, another fan was sad about the singer’s decision to leave Twitter. “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! ED SHEERAN ERASED HIS ACCOUNT ON TWITTER WHYYYY???????” Arisbet wrote.

It remains unclear what time Sheeran took down his Twitter account. However, according to The Independent, Sheeran’s account reappeared just hours after he deleted it, though all his tweets from 2015 were removed and his 19 million followers were down to less than 2,000. The “Castle on the Hill” singer had limited his activity before and explained that he could not cope with the online hate directed at him.

Meanwhile, “Game of Thrones” co- showrunner David Benioff previously revealed that they invited Sheeran on set because they wanted to surprise Williams, who was a big fan of the singer. The production had been trying to get the singer on the show for a while now, and they finally did it this season. Sheeran might return in the next episode even if he did not appear in the trailer.

According to TMZ, Sheeran announced a month ago that he would be quitting Twitter. However, the timing was very suspicious. Nevertheless, his cameo did not seem to have affected the ratings because the viewership of Season 7’s premiere episode was 27 percent higher than the premiere episode last season.
