“Eleanor & Park” author Rainbow Rowell will be writing the upcoming stories for Marvel’s ongoing “Runaways” comic series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the young adult fiction author will be teaming up Kris Anka, the artist of the comic books, for the upcoming installments. While speaking with the publication, Rowell expressed her excitement over her upcoming venture with Marvel. “This is my favorite Marvel book. When editor Nick Lowe first reached out to me a few years ago about maybe working for Marvel, it was the first that I asked him about. The characters and original story by Brian K. Vaughan are just so great and so beautifully built. I was really excited because I always felt like there were more ‘Runaway’ stories and that book should just have kept going,” she said.

The first installment of the “Runaways” series debuted in 2003, and it focused on the adventures of a telepathic dinosaur and five teenagers who came together when they found out that their parents were part of the criminal organization The Pride. The 18th and final installment of the series was released in 2004.

Meanwhile, Rowell also dished on what will happen to the five main characters in the comic series after they separated from each other. “At the beginning of the series they are scattered to the four winds and half of them are dead. One of the challenges now is who are they when they’re apart? They got thrown together, but now they’ve been pulled apart. They’re trying to figure out who they really are without each other… The arc is very much about them choosing to be together,” she explained.

Lowe added that the teenagers will come face-to-face with two villains. The artist also hinted on something creative that Rowell came up with to make “Runaways” even more interesting. “You’ll start seeing that but there are story elements that we don’t want to give away,” he said.

The first “Runaways” comic book is slated for release sometime in September. Rowell’s other books include “Attachments,” “Carry On,” “Landline” and “Fangirl.”
