Emily Giffin has issued an apology after getting flak over her controversial posts criticizing Meghan Markle.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a new video of Archie for his birthday. In the clip, the tot is seen sitting on the duchess’ lap as she reads him a story.

Giffin was among the many people who reacted to the video. However, the author received a lot of criticisms because she made mean comments that were directed at Prince Harry’s wife. She even called the Duchess of Sussex “unmaternal,” which sparked fury from the netizens. Several slammed Giffin on Twitter.

The “Something Borrowed” author has now responded to the backlash and asked for apology for her posts. She explained on Instagram that she was initially a fan of Prince Harry and Markle. To support her statement, she shared various snaps of her positive comments about Markle in the past.

She also added that she loved the fact that a biracial, American woman married into the royal family. She even hosted a gathering at her home to celebrate the couple’s royal wedding.

Giffin confessed that she was even appalled by the signs of racism targeting Markle. However, she admitted that she had a change of heart recently.

“Over recent months my feelings about BOTH Harry and Meghan changed. But I can say from the bottom of my heart that my criticism of Meghan has never had anything to do with her race,” Giffin wrote.

She added that she found fault with the way Prince Harry and Markle handled things and her feelings about those matters were evident in her posts lately, including the ones she shared on Archie’s birthday.

“I can see how some of my posts may have felt mean-spirited, and could be construed as having racial undertones. It was not my intent, but I understand that intent and impact are two very different things,” Giffin explained. “And I am truly sorry for that negative impact.”

Giffin’s apology was met with various reactions. One said that she was very disappointed with the author for her obsessions with the Sussexes. Another claimed that the author just said sorry because she was caught and she was afraid her book sales would be affected.

Meanwhile, another understood that it was not about race but pointed out that Giffin mom-shamed the duchess.

“Maybe it was never about race ...but it was absolutely about mom shaming, bullying and jumping on the opportunity to say mean comments! Seriously so cheap,” mariejdf commented.

One of her fans said that she followed Giffin because she loved her books and she enjoyed her posts about Donald Trump. However, she also noticed that Giffin’s daily posts about Markle were becoming more and more hateful. The netizen said it was “embarrassing and at worst incredibly sad to see.”

Several users encouraged Giffin to just leave Markle alone. Another advised that she should just let it go.
