Ryan Idol, a former gay porn star and Broadway actor, could be on his way to prison for the attempted murder of an ex-girlfriend.

Idol -- aka Marc Anthony Donais -- was convicted of attempted murder for beating the woman over the head with a porcelain toilet tank lid.

Idol claims his actions were in self-defense. The woman testified that he attacked her in an East Sacramento, Calif., apartment when she tried to break up with him.

The prosecution claimed that the attack was the result of Donais' jealousy and ego issues.

I think the jury was able to recognize that his narcissism and ego basically led him to where he was, Deputy District Attorney Kevin Jones told The Sacramento Bee.

Obviously, he's extremely disappointed, Donais' attorney, Johnny Griffin III, told The Sacramento Bee. He was devastated by the jury's verdict. He believes his behavior was in self-defense.

Donais appeared as The Man of the Month in a February 1989 issue of Playboy. He then went on to star in numerous gay porn films under the name Ryan Idol. He retired from the erotic film industry in 1996, and later fell out of a third-story window in a New York City apartment under mysterious circumstances.

In an attempt to cross over into Broadway acting, Idol starred in the play Making Porn in 1999.

Idol's victim testified to having an on-and-off relationship with the performer that began in the 1990s. The woman said she ended their relationship the first time after finding out that Idol had acted in gay pornographic films. The couple reunited in 2008 after Idol had embarked on a legitimate acting career, she said. They moved into a condo purchased by a male lover of Idol's, who eventually came to live with them. The woman said she moved out when she caught the two having sex.

She testified that shortly after moving out, Idol came to her aparment and announced: I came over here to kill you, The Sacramento Bee reported.

He just grabbed me like I was nothing, and he picked me up and he threw me into the bathroom, the woman testified at Donais' preliminary hearing. He came in and he started beating me with his fists. ... When he took the lid off the toilet ... I thought, 'Oh, my God, I'm not going to live.' And I looked down because I didn't want him to smash it on my face, and he smashed it on my head.

Telephone records revealed that Idol had called the woman 17 times in the four hours preceding the incident.

Idol claims that the woman came at him with a knife, at that he grabbed the toilet bowl cover to defend himself.

The sentencing is scheduled for Dec.9. Donais-Idol faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
