The producers of HBO's “Game of Thrones” have released a new video in which they discuss the events of Season 5, episode 8. The episode showcased the real threat from beyond the Wall and featured a scene of two popular characters coming together for the first time on the show. [Spoiler alert]

Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) had their first real conversation in the episode 8. In the video released on the YouTube channel of the show, Executive Producer D.B. Weiss pointed out that the talk focused on the similarities between the personal lives of Tyrion and Daenerys.

Executive Producer David Benioff explained that Tyrion felt a “lot of empathy” toward Daenerys for being an orphan, just like the Lannister. The two characters had “terrible fathers” and they shared many “links that bond them.” The character realizes that maybe Varys (Conleth Hill) was right about her and she was the “last hope for Westeros.” But, another factor for Tyrion is his personal ambitions and Benioff revealed that the character thinks that the mother of dragons could bring him “back into power.”

Benioff also revealed that Tyrion was one of the few “players in this game” who believes that it is possible to make things better for the common people. Daenerys had also stated in “Game of Thrones” Season 5, episode 8 that she was not interested in just power, as some of the other major Houses of Westeros.

Weiss hinted that while Daenerys was idealistic in her approach, Tyrion was more practical. Lannister has heard a lot of “pretty words” in his life and has seen good plans “go awry” when the plans “meet with reality.” After losing her trusted aid and adviser Barristan (Ian McElhinney) the mother of dragons now plans to recruit Tyrion into her services.

The other major reveal in the episode was the first full blown attack of the White Walkers and their army of the dead. The producers revealed that this part of the episode was an opportunity for them to show something that is “fresh” for both the book readers as well as the fans who are only following the TV series, as it is something that “no one has seen.”

The episode also featured the Night King who watched Jon Snow (Kit Harington) kill one of “his lieutenants.” Benioff said that the character saw Jon as a possible threat after seeing him in action. The character was expecting an easy victory and Weiss pointed out that the scene would have been a “complete slaughter” if not for the “meaningful resistance” put up by Jon.

The producers have also given the fans a closer look at some of the weapons seen in the “Game of Thrones” Season 5, episode 8. The weapons used by the Free Folk as well as the White Walkers can be seen in this report by Making Game of Thrones. The weapons seen in the report include axes and short swords. The sword by the White Walkers is supposedly a shard of ice and the producers used a translucent rubber to give the blade an icy look.
