“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez is a seasoned actress who is ready to take on any role, but she admitted that Season 3 was quite difficult to do for one specific reason.

Rodriguez told Gold Derby that the loss of her TV husband, Brett Dier, was extremely emotional for her. Rodriguez’s character Jane Gloriana Villanueva was devastated without him, and apparently, Rodriguez feels the same way.

“It’s definitely been a more challenging season because shaking off the devastation of losing Brett as my acting partner felt so much like life imitating art, art imitating life, that it presented challenges I don’t think I was ever prepared for when doing an art project,” she said.

However, Rodriguez understands how pivotal Michael Cordero’s death was in shaping Jane’s character arc, so she accepted the painful reality of Dier’s absence. “You want life to go a certain way, you expect it to go a certain way. It doesn’t go that way, so how do you adjust to that?” she reflected.

Show creator Jennie Snyder Urman further assured fans that Jane won’t end up lonely, and she even has a bevy of suitors lined up. Snyder told Entertainment Weekly that Jane will indeed experience true love a second time around.

“Part of the journey is, like Gina said, she started out this optimistic, romantic dreamer and then she was hit by reality in a really big way. What I want to see in the back half of the series is how she regains some of that optimism, some of that love, and starts to believe in romance again and how it’s different from what she first thought it was, so we’re going to get into that and how does Jane believe in magic again,” she explained.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
