Former friends-turned-rivals Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) will reunite in “Gotham” Season 4. FOX

Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) used to be as thick as thieves until they had a huge falling out in “Gotham” Season 3.

But with so many things going on, the two might set aside their grudge against one another and team up again. This is what Taylor told TV Line about Penguin and the Riddler’s constantly evolving storyline.

“The Riddler and the Penguin come back into each other’s lives, and it’s a really, really great moment. And it’s unexpected; I don’t think people will expect the way this happens,” he said. “It also kind of shows one of my favorite things about the show, which is that these characters take the lessons and the experiences of the past and they change and they grow and they evolve, as the years go on.”

Taylor added that everything that happened between the two characters have shaped them into becoming stronger individuals, so they will bring these newfound strength and knowledge to the table.

“And that’s why I think it’s unexpected but it gives our show a groundedness and a reality. Like, things aren’t just tossed away. The characters remember the people that have hurt them. It’s bingeable TV!” he continued.

Another character that Cobblepot will interact a lot with this season is Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan). During a live Tumblr Q&A, Taylor told Inverse that he is excited for fans to see these two characters form a union. “I’m excited for fans to see the interplay between Jerome and Penguin,” Taylor said. “I think it’ll change minds about people’s ideas about both the characters.”

It’s clear right off the bat that Jerome is in charge of Arkham Asylum, and Cobblepot acknowledges it since the place is “chaotic and fits his personality” well.

On the other hand, Cobblepot likes control. He is a fish out of water in a place that has no order, and for him, that’s very troubling. “It’s very terrifying for him to be in this situation. It’s emotional too, because for once he didn’t do anything bad. To find himself at the whims of a madman that is Jerome, it’s one of the most challenging things he has to deal with,” he said.

“Gotham” Season 4 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
