Gotham
Jerome Valezka (Cameron Monaghan) will be teaming up with the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) when he returns in “Gotham” Season 4. FOX

The appearances of Jerome Valezka (Cameron Monaghan) in the Fox show “Gotham” have been pretty inconsistent. The character would make a big splash by terrorizing the citizens of Gotham, but then disappear and be dragged off to Arkham Asylum after just a few episodes.

This Season 4 is no different. Still, it is always a treat to see Jerome, or the prototype Joker, come up with new ways to torment Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and put a frown on Jim Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie) face.

Monaghan teased that his character will be back soon by posting a photo of his chair on the set of “Gotham.” He did not provide any caption, and tagged the location in “New York, New York.”

It was executive producer John Stephens who shared some details about Jerome’s return. “You're totally gonna see him this year. You’re gonna see him in a new position this year, and he's gonna form an alliance with a character who he has not been near at any time soon,” Stephens told Comic Book. “Essentially, we're gonna see him and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) come closer.”

Will the two team up to defeat Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris)? Professor Pyg, or the “cop killer,” has been causing Jim and his colleagues a lot of trouble over the past few episodes, and because he is so smart, the GCPD are nowhere near tracking him down.

“Gotham” fans have come to know Jerome as the Joker. His sinister laugh and smile, not to mention his crazy antics, are truly reminiscent of the villain’s comic book persona.

However, co-executive producer and writer Bryan Wynbrandt told Screen Rant that Jerome isn’t actually the Joker, since he is merely their “homage” to the villain.

“He’s obviously not the Joker himself, although [he] clearly seems to be the impetus that eventually creates the Joker,” he explained. “The more that we see him, the more he carves out his own path I’d say. I wouldn’t say he becomes more the Joker, but the Jerome character continues to evolve.”

“Gotham” Season 4 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.
