“Veep” star Reid Scott has booked a recurring role in Season 2 of “Great News.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Scott will play the role of Jeremy in multiple episodes of the sophomore run of the NBC sitcom. Jeremy, who is described as a highly intelligent New York Times reporter, makes his debut appearance in episode 4 of the season. While covering a dangerous story together, Jeremy and MMN segment producer Katie (Briga Heelan) form a connection with each other and eventually start dating.

Jeremy isn’t the first character to be introduced as Katie’s boyfriend on the show. Season 1, episode 4, titled “War Is Hell,” revealed that Katie actually had a secret boyfriend named Trip (Tommy Dewey), who works as a freelance photographer. In the episode, Trip returned from Syria, and Katie’s mom Carol (Andrea Martin) discovered their relationship. Carol did a background check on Trip and learned that his mother is deceased, enabling her to take over that role. Towards the end of the episode, Katie realized that her misgivings about Trip were her own, so she broke up with him. Surprisingly, Trip was fine with the breakup, revealing that he’s disgusted by Katie and Carol’s behavior anyway.

Jeremy’s arrival in Katie’s life is expected to impact the awkward relationship between Katie and MMN executive producer Greg (Adam Campbell), who came so close to kissing her in the Season 1 finale. But series creator and executive producer Tracey Wigfield, who also appears on the show as MMN resident meteorologist Beth Vierk, said that Katie and Greg shippers have nothing to worry about.

“The Katie-Greg stuff is definitely in the background,” Wigfield said. “Hopefully it will come to a head in some exciting way towards the later part of the season.”

In addition to playing Dan Egan on HBO’s “Veep,” Scott is also known for his roles as Brando Dorff on TBS’ “My Boys” and as Bobby O’Neill on ABC’s “It’s All Relative.” Scott is the latest cast addition to Season 2 of “Great News.” He joins previously announced series newcomer Tina Fey, who will recur as MMN new boss Diana St. Tropez.

“She’s sort of the Sheryl Sandberg on steroids,” Wigfield said (via The Hollywood Reporter) of Fey’s character at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour earlier this month.

“Great News” Season 2 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 9:30 p.m. EDT on NBC.
