When "Hamilton" emerged on the scene in 2015, it instantly became the hottest new show, selling out theatres both on and off-Broadway. So, it's no surprise that when the movie version of the musical hit the Disney+ streaming platform it performed just as well.

Just how well did it perform though? In one word -- extremely.

After much anticipation, "Hamilton" was released for audiences on July 3 ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend and over a year before it was originally set to be released in theatres. The move turned out to be a winner for the entertainment conglomerate because it resulted in a surge of downloads for their recently launched streaming service.

According to data provided by the analytics firm Apptopia and reported by Variety, the Disney+ app "was downloaded 513,323 times globally, including 266,084 times in the U.S." In layman's terms, the outlet calculated that the downloads for the weekend (Friday through Sunday) "were 72.4% higher than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable time periods." And that's only in the U.S., worldwide, not including India or Japan, it was less, but its still a huge jump from the running average of 46.6%.

The success of "Hamilton" on Disney's streaming service comes after it has already received multiple accolades. The musical, created by and starring Lin Manuel-Miranda, has won multiple awards since its premiere, including 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize in Drama, both in 2016.

Although the film's digital release made the play more accessible to fans, it'll still cost to watch the popular work of art from the comfort of home. In order to stream "Hamilton," viewers must have an active subscription to Disney+. This can be obtained in a few different ways -- signing up for a monthly subscription ($6.99/month or $70/year) or by purchasing the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN bundle ($12.99/month).

Those who may have thought of the clever plan to sign up for a free trial only to cancel once finished watching will be disappointed to learn that Disney+ stopped offering its seven-day free trial in June, prior to the "Hamilton" release. At the end of the day though, $6.99 is still cheaper than a movie ticket in most, if not all, places, and judging by the success of "Hamilton" both on and off-screen, it'll be $7 well spent.

"Hamilton" is available for streaming now on Disney+.
