Magnolia Pictures announced on the occasion of Bob Marley’s birthday that they have acquired U.S. rights to Marley, a documentary about the legendary musician.

The documentary directed by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald will be released in U.S. cinemas and on VOD and digital platforms on April 20, 2012, after its world premiere at the 62nd Berlin film festival, according to the press release.

However, the UK release of the documentary has not yet been announced.

The Last King of Scotland director has used rare footage of performances, interviews with family, friends and bandmates and also archival photos in the documentary.

Cable network VH1 has partnered with Magnolia Pictures to license the first TV window of the film as a part of their VH1 Rock Doc franchise. It will also help in promoting the documentary across their music channel.

“Bob Marley is a fascinating, towering figure in musical history, and Marley is the biography that he deserves. Kevin Macdonald has once again shown himself to be a master documentarian with this eye-opening, entertaining, beautifully crafted film,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles.

Marley is the first documentary about the legend that tells the definitive life story of the musician, and revolutionary, from his initial days to his rise to international fame.

“This documentary is the ultimate revelation of my father’s life. The family is proud to be able to have the world finally experience this emotional journey, said Ziggy Marley, an executive producer on the film.
