A three-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were in hospital following a shooting at an apartment in Hickory, North Carolina, on Thursday night.

Capt. Jeff Young of the Hickory Police Department said a third person was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Burke County, approximately 10 miles away from the apartment. The boy, reportedly 17-year-old, was believed to be the suspect in the shooting and police believe an altercation led to the shooting, the Hickory Daily Record reported.

Both the victims were taken to Frye Regional Medical Center. While the three-year-old was believed to stable, the teen was listed critical. Additional police personnel were stationed at the emergency room of the medical center. A witness said the hospital was in lockdown for a brief period of time, ABC-affiliated television station WSOC reported.

A car window near the shooting scene reportedly appeared shattered and shell casings from bullets were also found.

The Hickory police were at the scene and they requested for more lighting in order to collect evidence. The investigation was ongoing.

This is a developing story.
