  • Carol Maraj filed a $150 million lawsuit against Charles Polevich
  • Lawyer Ben Crump broke the news on Twitter
  • Polevich's attorney thinks the amount is "over the top"

Nicki Minaj’s mother, Carol Maraj, has filed a civil lawsuit in connection with the death of her husband, Robert Maraj, who passed away in a hit-and-run accident last month.

The $150 million lawsuit was filed Friday in the Supreme Court of the State of New York against the driver named Charles Polevich by lawyers Ben Crump and Paul Napoli on behalf of the rapper's mother.

Crump took to Twitter on Friday to share that the lawsuit had been filed and noted how "irresponsible" and "negligent" Polevich was.

"Paul Napoli and I have filed a $150 million lawsuit in the hit-and-run death of Robert Maraj, @NICKIMINAJ's father," he tweeted. "Charles Polevich was not only irresponsible & negligent in hitting Maraj, but was more concerned about running away and hiding than seeking help."

The incident took place in Long Island on Feb. 12 when Robert, 64, was crossing the street and was struck by Polevich's vehicle. Although Polevich, 70, stopped his vehicle to confirm if Maraj was fine, he did not call for any help and then left the scene. He was arrested on Feb. 17.

"He was absolutely aware of what happened," Nassau County Police Detective Steven Fitzpatrick said as per USA Today.

"He got out of the car and he looked at the deceased, got into his car, and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man," Fitzpatrick said further. "He went home and secluded the vehicle. He's well aware of what he did."

Polevich has also been charged with tampering with physical evidence. After fleeing the crime scene, he parked his vehicle in the detached garage to hide it from the police.

Marc Craig Gann, Polevich's attorney, said the amount was "over the top." "My client empathizes with the family. The question of whether there was negligence and degrees of negligence will be determined by the court. The $150 million amount seems to be over the top," he told TMZ.

Since the incident took place, the 38-year-old rapper has not made any statement about her father.
