A man and his wife took their lives in a case of a suicide pact in India, the local police said Friday.

The incident took place in the eastern state of Odisha. The couple was found dead inside their home, according to Odisha TV.

It is believed the couple first consumed poison and then hanged themselves from the roof of the house. The victims were identified as Bisikesan Sahu and his wife, Mama Sahu, Kalinga TV reported.

The couple had been married for 15 years, and the two shared a 14-year-old son. It remains unclear if the teenage son was in the house when his parents took the drastic step.

According to the police, the couple decided to end their lives as they were unable to repay a loan they had taken.

The police also found "we have consumed poison" scribbled on the floor of the room from where their bodies were recovered.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, and the bodies of the victims have been sent for autopsy, the police said.

In a similar incident last year, a couple killed themselves by jumping into a river with their two children in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The incident reportedly was caused by family disputes. The bodies of 38-year-old Kanchi Satish, his 28-year-old wife, Sandhya, their 2-year-old daughter, Bindu Sri Durga, and their 4-year-old son, Jaswin, were found by the police in the river Godavari. The police had launched a search operation after finding an abandoned bike, clothes and flip-flops on West Godavari District's Chinchinada bridge. When the couple and their children, including their 4-year-old son Jaswin, had gone missing, their families filed a missing report. A suicide note found at the scene by the police stated the family had been cheated by unnamed individuals. The police launched an investigation at the time to locate the individuals.
