Ian Somerhalder will no longer be confined to the small screen. “The Vampire Diaries” heartthrob is starring in Noel Clarke’s new film, “The Anomaly.”

Somerhalder, 34, will be joining Alexis Knapp, Brian Cox and Luke Hemsworth on screen for the new flick. According to Entertainment Weekly, “The Anomaly” is about a “traumatized ex-soldier who wakes up in the back of a van, alongside a kidnapped boy, to find that he only has nine minutes and 37 seconds of consciousness to work out why and how he got there.”

News of Ian Somerhalder’s addition to the cast comes after the actor’s mysterious tweets regarding a movie he’s working on in Europe over the summer. The actor, who plays bad boy vampire Damon Salvatore on “The Vampire Diaries,” is currently on summer break for the hit CW series as it preps for its highly anticipated fifth season.

“The Vampire Diaries” writers are currently one week into developing some upcoming drama for the new season. Somerhalder has been traveling since season four shooting wrapped in April, but has been keeping fans updated on what’s going on. On April 25 the actor tweeted his game plan for the summer. “Packing-off to China! See you soon! Then NY, Spain, Canada, Russia, Hungary, Italy, France, Brussels, England (for movie) the back to NY then ATL 4TVD.” In early May he teased visiting LA to “break down the new movie” he would be working on. His latest tweet on the movie came on May 20.

“Paris – It was short and sweet, thanks for the abundance of love,” Somerhalder tweeted.“Great day in London, rehearsing new movie. So. Damn. Happy. Here. In Europe.”
