Immortals Conquers Weekend US Box Office With $32 million

Immortals, a 3D action-fantasy-adventure on the lines of 300, dominated the US box office this weekend with an estimated $32 million in ticket receipts, beating Jack and Jill, an Adam Sandler comedy and J. Edgar, a biography movie starring Leonardo Dicaprio and directed by Clint Eastwood.

The story of Immortal, a muscle-fantasy adventure, is a simple one - it is based on war of the gods against men. Hyperion, an evil king of Crete (Mickey Rourke), with antipathy against the gods (because they failed to save his family from illness), starts breaking peace with the heavenly beings by committing a massacre of innocent people.

At the same time, he searches for the Epirus Bow, a powerful weapon created by Ares (Daniel Sharman), the God of War, to destroy the human race and to conquer the world by releasing the Titans from Mount Tartarus.

For that reason, Hyperion became a threat not only to human beings but even to the gods.

However, as the gods cannot interfere with the conflict directly, Zeus (Luke Evans), disguised as an old man, decides to help the human beings indirectly by providing them with the know-hows of winning the war.

Zeus meets with Ares, Poseidon (Kellan Lutz), Athena (Isabel Lucas), Apollo (Corey Sevier) and Heracles (Steve Byers) and decides to choose Theseus (Henry Cavill) as their chosen warrior, whose mother was murdered by Hyperion in his presence after which he was enslaved and forced to work in the mines.

With help of of a temple priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto), Theseus starts his war against Hyperion. But as Hyperion rallies the Titans, the gods get involved in the war and chaos ensues.

Finally, Theseus manages to kill Hyperion and is wlecomes into Mount Olympus by the gods for his sacrifice and valor.

It is obvious that Immortal is a tremendous-scale movie. When it comes to visuals and the fight scenes, 3D, even 4D would be good.

The focus of Immortals is war. If you loved 300, you will love Immortals. But if you are expecting a bit more, then you'll be left wanting. Based on the movie poster there are 4 gods - Ares, Poseidon and Athena and Zeus. Except for Zeus, other gods, especially Ares and Poseidon, appear only for a few minutes in the last fight scene. So those who are expecting to see more of the gods - how they scheme and battle - might be dissapointed.

But yes, it cannot be denied that the last fight scene is excellent. In fact, it is mind-blowing.
