As an animal shelter in Brooklyn disputed Lena Dunham’s claims of her former dog Lamby's challenging behavior was due to abuse he had previous suffered, angry users took to Twitter on Friday to say she was lying, with some even blaming her for the dog's current state.

According to reports, Lena drew flak not just for sending Lamby back to an animal shelter but also because many thought she was not giving proper care to the dog. In June, the "Girls" star said on an Instagram post, she was giving Lamby away to an “amazing professional facility” in Los Angeles so someone “educated in a rescue dog’s specific trauma” could care for him

Lena said Lamby suffered terrible abuse as a puppy, which made having him in a typical home environment dangerous, to others as well as himself, which is why she and her musician boyfriend Jack Antonoff “needed to be responsible to ourselves, our neighbors and especially our beloved boy.” She also said they needed to save their home because the dog “ruined floors and couches and our life.”

Lamby was sent to The Zen Dog, a canine rehabilitation center in Los Angeles. Matt Beisner, trainer and owner of Zen Dog said Lamby was “a hot mess” when he arrived, reported People magazine. Beisner said the dog was heavily medicated, had a nasty temperament, and was drinking his own urine.

Additionally, Robert Vazquez, the spokesman of the no-kill animal shelter in Brooklyn where Dunham had got Lamby from, BARC, told Yahoo Celebrity: "When she adopted the dog from us, it wasn’t crazy. I have pictures of the dog loving on Lena and her mom, which is weird if the dog was abused. It wouldn’t be cuddling with her or be in the bed with her ‘boyfriend’ in the pages of Vogue."

Vaquez also said, "If Lamby had a bad past or was abused, do you think BARC would have adopted him to Lena knowing she’s a new star and put her — or the dog — in that situation?” We would have told her if the dog had issues. We are a no-kill shelter. We don’t lie about the dogs’ histories because that gets them returned — and mentally it’s not good for the dogs."

Lena however said the dog’s aggression started immediately after it was adopted. In a piece to the New Yorker, she wrote that despite her boyfriend Jack’s allergies to dogs, she adopted Lamby anyway. She also posted pictures of her injuries after Lamby apparently bit her.

People on the internet however, especially Twitter users, criticized Lena’s version of the entire episode, saying they believed BARC's statement that Lamby was not abused prior to adoption. Some also asserted she was to blame for the state Lamby was in.

In February this year, Lena appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon with two other dogs she said she adopted to “fill the hole Lamby had left.” Reacting to this, some expressed their worry for her new dogs as well.

Some also took to Facebook to express their disapproval in the comments section, saying she was twisting the story for attention and that people like her "were physically and emotionally pained at the mere thought of taking responsibility for their actions."

Defending herself, Dunham took to Instagram again to say she was “sorry to have disappointed” the people from the animal shelter because her version of the story was different from theirs.

Lamby has since stabilized and found a new home.
