Fans thought “Jane the Virgin” was through with love triangles after Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) finally chose Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) over Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni), but The CW show stirred up old feelings again in Season 3.

Rafael fell back in love with Petra, who reciprocated his feelings. However, Petra cannot shake off the nagging feeling that Rafael still carries the torch for Jane.

Baldoni said during an interview with The CW that Rafael is in a tight spot since he initially buried his feelings for Jane. Knowing that she might love him back will definitely make him more confused.

“I think to be Rafael is very confusing right now. Jane was the love of his life. And then he had to watch her marry Michael, and he made a very conscious choice to put his feelings aside for Jane and to be there for his son. And he hasn’t let any feelings for Jane creep in for the last few years,” he said.

“And there’s Petra who he got to watch raise his girls. And Petra was there for Rafael every step of the way - with the hotel, with everything he was dealing with. I think naturally, he developed feelings for her,” Baldoni continued.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez said that Jane, Rafael and Petra have developed a good “co-parenting situation,” which Jane feels hesitant to rock. So even though her heart beat again for Rafael, she might ignore these feelings so that everybody would be happy and comfortable.

“Jane’s mentality is to never disrupt something harmonious, but I think she can’t deny there’s a connection she has with Rafael and will always have,” said Rodriguez.

As for Grobglas, she said “the stakes are much higher” now among the three of them, so they no longer have the luxury of playing around with their emotions. “They’re not just kids fooling around. They have children,” she said.

Things might get even more complicated with the arrival of Jane’s first love, Adam (Tyler Posey). Executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman told Entertainment Tonight that Adam and Jane are going to spend a lot of time together, and “he’s going to be pushing her towards things that she might not be comfortable with.”

“He’s just in a different place, doesn’t have kids. He’s a single guy and what that looks like is going to be interesting for us to play with,” she said.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 will return on The CW on Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. EDT.
