New wrinkles and updates continue to emerge in the ongoing investigation into the suspicious death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

According to a new report, a prison guard connected to the case was been offered a plea deal but turned it down. The guard had been working at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center on the August night when Epstein died, allegedly by suicide.

The discussion of plea deals generally precedes the issuance of criminal charges. It could be seen as a sign the Department of Justice is preparing to bring charges in relation to Epstein's mysterious demise.

Epstein had been on suicide watch at the time of his death, following what was believed to be a previous attempt to take his own life. Initial investigations into his death revealed that the guards assigned to him that night had not checked on him on the half-hour, as is required when someone is put on suicide watch.

The official autopsy conducted on Epstein’s body concluded that the disgraced financier and accused pedophile had killed himself. A more recent, independent autopsy – commissioned by Epstein’s brother – contradicted the official findings, saying that the body showed signs more indicative of homicide.

Allegations from the public of a conspiracy to silence Epstein were ripe following his death. Accused of sexually assaulting underage girls and trafficking them for high-profile public figures, many assumed that Epstein would name several of his biggest clients once on trial.
