Murtaugh is reunited with one of his old partners in Season 2, episode 2 of “Lethal Weapon.”

In the trailer for next week’s episode of the Fox series, Captain Avery (Kevin Rahm) informs Murtaugh (Damon Wayans), Riggs (Clayne Crawford) and the rest of the team that the LAPD brass is sending over a deputy chief to evaluate the entire robbery-homicide division. When Murtaugh asks who this deputy chief is, new character Gina Santos (Michelle Hurd) walks into Avery’s office and greets Murtaugh: “Hello, Roger!”

Murtaugh immediately freaks out upon seeing Santos and later reveals to Riggs that he and Santos have history together.

“We were partners for like, two days,” Wayans told TV Insider of Murtaugh and Santos’ previous working relationship. “In Murtaugh’s mind, she came onto him so he asked for a transfer and a new partner. Now she’s the deputy chief so she has power over him. She’s coming to make his life miserable.”

As for what really happened between Murtaugh and Santos in the past, executive producer Matt Miller revealed to TVLine that “they were on a stakeout late one night, they were in the car together, and ‘Dancing in September’ came on the radio. They both reached to turn the volume up, and their fingers hit and ‘lingered.’”

Apparently, that so-called “finger linger” has taken on a deeper meaning in Murtaugh’s mind, because he considers it “a major source of sexual tension that is basically a chasm between the two of them,” Miller continued. “He eventually calls her on it — but she has no recollection of the incident. He has only sunk himself deeper in the hole with her.”

As for the case of the week, the synopsis for the episode reveals that Murtaugh and Riggs respond to the death of a plastic surgeon, which draws them into a case involving an illegal drug ring run out of a wellness clinic. Palmer (Hilarie Burton) from the DEA and Riggs compete to solve the case first.

Elsewhere in the episode, Murtaugh and Trish (Keesha Sharp) face the emotional challenges of sending their first son, RJ (Dante Brown), off to college.

“Lethal Weapon” Season 2, episode 2, titled “Dancing in September,” airs on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. on Fox. Watch the trailer for the episode below:
