  • Dillon Brooks fired a shot towards Donovan Mitchell's groin that started the incident
  • Brooks and Mitchell were subsequently ejected from the game as the Cavaliers beat the Grizzlies
  • Mitchell sounded off on Brooks in the press conference and asked the NBA to do something

The Memphis Grizzlies continue on their backslide from the top of the Western Conference after falling 113-128 to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but Dillon Brooks getting into a fight with Donovan Mitchell made their loss much more bitter.

In the middle of the third quarter with the Grizzlies trailing the Cavaliers by five, Brooks' attempt at a layup was met up top by Evan Mobley and fell to the floor as Mitchell grabbed the rebound.

Brooks then inexplicably rolled towards Mitchell's direction and fired a left hand towards Mitchell's groin which immediately sent the Cavaliers guard to the ground, but not before throwing the ball at Brooks' direction–as if to say the gesture was highly unappreciated.

The Grizzlies' coaching staff, referees, and players on the floor quickly rushed to separate the two players from putting on a full-on brawl as Mitchell rose up to his feet and shoved Brooks.

Judging things solely on the camera angle at the 1:31 mark of the video, Brooks knew exactly where Mitchell was before throwing his hand.

Brooks and Mitchell were later ejected from the melee and the NBA is yet to confirm whether they will be handing out suspensions or fines in light of the incident.

The former Utah Jazz guard ended his night with six points on 2-of-11 field goal shooting (2-of-4 threes, zero free throws), four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in 22 minutes of game time.

Brooks, who logged 22 minutes as well, put up nine points (2-of-5 from the field), two boards, an assist, and a steal.

Credit goes to the yet-to-be-named Grizzlies personnel who tackled Brooks and kept him on the ground as things were being sorted out, preventing any further issues from happening.

Mitchell later addressed the altercation with Brooks in the post-game press conference and had the following to say.

"That's just who he is. We've seen it a bunch in this league with him. Him and I have had our personal battles over the years. Quite frankly, I've been busting his [explicit] for years in the playoffs, regular season, and the one game he does an alright job on me, he decides to do something like that," Mitchell said.

"There's no place for that in the game. You've got to protect yourself at the end of the day. This has been brewing for years... This isn't new... The line has been drawn and the NBA has to do something about it because, like I said, I'm not the only person this has happened to."

The Grizzlies and Cavaliers have been at each other's throats at one point thus far into the season and Brooks was again involved in the deciding play of the game.

During their January 18 matchup, Brooks helped secure their 11-game winning streak, tying their franchise record, with a block on Darius Garland to win 115-114.

Thankfully for the NBA's higher-ups, these two teams will not meet each other anymore the rest of the season.

The Cavaliers improve to 32-22 while the Grizzlies fall to 32-20–winning only one game in their past eight matchups.
