KEY POINTS

  • Dillon Brooks had no trouble defending Darius Garland on the perimeter
  • Steven Adams gave the Memphis Grizzlies the one-point lead
  • The question now is who can stop the Grizzlies' momentum

The Memphis Grizzlies continue their romp through the Western Conference standings with a resilient victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers off Dillon Brooks' defensive efforts.

With the Grizzlies holding on to a one-point lead after a tip-in by Steven Adams off a Ja Morant layup miss, the Cavaliers decided to put the ball in the hands of emergent point guard Darius Garland.

Garland received a pick from Jarrett Allen near the halfcourt line and threatened to take a shot, but he decided against it as Brooks was closing in on him and elected to pass it out to Caris LeVert.

As the clock continued to wind down, desperation settled in for Cleveland as the ball found Garland once again and a quick crossover allowed him some room to get past Brooks for a shot.

But it was too little too late as Brooks' lengthy arms found the ball and swatted away the Cavaliers' hopes for a game-winner as the FedEx Forum erupted in cheers for their hometown Grizzlies.

Brooks became a massively disliked figure amongst NBA fans for his ill-advised chase-down block attempt on Gary Payton II during Game 2 of the 2022 Western Conference Semifinals, suffering a fractured elbow but was able to return in the Finals.

This time though, he proved that the Payton incident was simply an isolated matter as he helped Memphis earn their 11th straight victory—currently the highest in the league and tying their franchise high.

Everything appears to be clicking at the right time for the Grizzlies with them and the Denver Nuggets being the healthiest teams in the West and it would not be surprising to see them enter the postseason as the favorites to come out of the conference.

Memphis is as formidable as they come and it would be hard to see them being beaten anytime soon.

The next five teams getting a crack at ending the Grizzlies' scorching hot streak are the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves–all away games.
