A man killed his girlfriend’s grandmother suspecting her of practicing witchcraft. The incident took place in Zimbabwe’s Bulilima district on Wednesday.

According to local reports, the man, identified as 32-year-old Alfred Gumbo, stayed with his girlfriend and her 86-year-old grandmother. On Wednesday night, the accused arrived home drunk and started accusing the octogenarian of bewitching him. This resulted in an altercation between the two. In a fit of rage, the grandmother picked up a log and hit Gumbo on his forehead. In retaliation, the accused beat the woman several times with a log till she died.

“Gumbo retaliated and also picked up a log from the floor and struck the woman several times all over the body until she died and he fled from the scene,” police said.

The granddaughter alerted the neighbors about the incident. They soon managed to catch the accused and took him to the police station. The man was taken into custody and a case of murder was filed.

In a similar incident in Uganda last year, a man beheaded an elderly woman over witchcraft suspicion. Filista Candiru was working in the garden when Geoffrey Aluma Angupala attacked her. Angupala told the police that he wanted to kill the woman’s son for practicing witchcraft. However, when the son fled from the village, he decided to kill his mother instead.
