In a shocking incident, a man stabbed his estranged wife to death before killing himself in front of their eight-year-old son. The incident took place in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.

Police and emergency services responded to the scene after receiving reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, the officers found the 36-year-old woman lying motionless inside a car. A 40-year-old man was also found injured near the vehicle, however, he succumbed to injuries shortly after the emergency services arrived. Their eight-year-old son, who was found uninjured in the car, was in the care of detectives.

“The female was deceased when emergency services arrived. The male died at the scene a short time later. A child that was also believed to have been in the vehicle was not physically injured,” a police spokeswoman said, adding that police were investigating to find out the exact cause of the incident.

A shocked neighbor said the couple had separated recently.

“They lived here about 10 years ago. They bought a house in Blackburn and had this place rented out. Then recently they had separated and he had moved back in last Sunday. It's just a big shock,” the unidentified neighbor said.

Another neighbor said, "It's terrible. I’ve lived here for 25 years ... we are very much a quiet little community particularly at our end of the street.”

Expressing his disbelief, another neighbor said, "The street itself is normally very quiet. Nothing normally happens in this street and it’s a bit of a shock, as such. Normally you see things on TV thinking something’s never going to happen in your neighborhood.”

Speaking to 9News, Daniel Bourke, a resident of the area, said he knew the couple and there was nothing suspicious about them. “I found them okay," he said.

Meanwhile, police have requested anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
