A Chinese man brutally killed an elderly woman who he accidentally knocked her down with his vehicle so he could avoid paying for her medical expenses. The man was sentenced to death Friday, a year after the incident took place.

The unidentified 67-year-old woman was riding her cycle to a market when she was knocked down by the van driven by the accused, identified as Zeng, in Henan province of China in October last year.

The man got down from his vehicle and pretended to take the injured victim to a nearby hospital. However, he instead pulled over his van near a mountainous area, picked up a rock from the side of the road and dropped it on the victim’s head. He then took a blunt object from his vehicle and hit her repeatedly on the head.

Zeng then pulled the woman to a nearby ditch where he drenched her with gasoline before setting her ablaze.

When the man was taken into custody, he confessed to the murder. He told the police that he decided to kill the victim as he was afraid he would lose a lot of money if he paid for her medical expenses. Police said the accused also had an outstanding payment of almost $29,000 from a previous traffic accident, an amount he hadn’t paid off when he killed the woman. The man was found guilty of intentional homicide in the first trial that took place in May.
