A man stabbed his three neighbors after they attempted to stop him from killing himself. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday night.

Police said the man, identified as 30-year-old Karthik Nivas, was out of work for seven months. On Saturday night, he decided to kill himself and sent his parents out of their home.

"His parents allege that he is mentally challenged. On Saturday night, he told them that he was going to kill himself and sent them out of the house. Hearing his parents’ cries, the neighbors rushed to his help," a police officer told local daily the New Indian Express.

His neighbors, identified as 55-year-old Manivannan, 53-year-old Leelavathi and Mary Valarmathi, rushed to the scene and started banging on the door. They continued to knock the door for a while but to no avail. Suddenly, the man opened the door and stabbed the neighbors.

“Suddenly, Karthik opened the door and started assaulting the trio with a pair of scissors. While Manivannan and his wife Leelavathi escaped with minor injuries, Karthik stabbed Mary Valarmathi in the neck,” said a police officer.

Valarmathi was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was admitted to the ICU. Her condition was not known. Meanwhile, a police case was filed against Nivas who was taken into custody the following day. Investigation was ongoing.
