“Butterfly” singer Mariah Carey had a really rough time performing during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” on Saturday night because of some technical issues.

The singer was required to perform three songs, “Auld Lang Syne,” “Emotions” and “We Belong Together,” but she did a poor job lip syncing because her earpiece wasn’t working properly. Carey tried to soldier on despite the technical glitches, but according to her staff, she should have just left.

Carey’s manager Stella Bulochnikov, who was by the singer’s side at the event, told Entertainment Weekly that her back-up dancers were already motioning for her to leave the stage at one point. But Carey refused to do so. Bulochnikov said Carey “should have walked off and thrown the mic at somebody’s head — that would have been a great moment.”

Her manager insisted that the fault does not lie with Carey because she was a pro all throughout the incident, and she even rehearsed for the show. But even then, the whole set wasn’t working properly. “The most important thing to her was the sound. The sound was coming in choppy. She was assured it would work by the evening,” she said.

Fans already noticed something was amiss in the performance while Carey was singing “Auld Lang Syne,” but when it came to the second song, “Emotions,” Carey appeared to be confused since her earpiece wasn’t working properly. She told the audience: “We can’t hear, but I’ll just get through the moment.”

“We didn’t have a [sound] check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to No. 1, and that’s what it is,” she later said on stage.

After the incident, Carey decided to poke fun at the whole fiasco on her social media page by posting a GIF of herself shrugging and showing an indifferent expression.
