KEY POINTS

  • A customer at a Queens bagel shop called out a maskless woman who kept on coughing
  • The maskless "Karen" then stormed over to the female customer and intentionally coughed at her
  • A video of the incident made rounds in social media

A video shows a female customer, who has since then been called Queens “Karen,” raging at another shopper who complained to a New York Bagel Coffee House worker about the former’s failure to wear a mask amid the COVID-10 pandemic. The unmasked woman then proceeded to cough at the complainant’s face before storming out of the store, the TMZ footage shows.

Lack Of Protective Gear

Federal and local authorities in New York have issued guidelines about the need for people to wear masks whenever they go out in public. The measure is intended to help curb the spread of coronavirus, which has made NYC the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States.

Like most shops in the city, the New York City Bagel Coffee House in Astoria, Queens, has recently resumed business operations after lockdown measures were relaxed. As they did not have any mandatory mask-on policy, one of the customers suggested to a staffer that they must have this measure in place after seeing a fellow customer not wearing a mask. According to a report by NYPost, the mask-less patron has been coughing and was not covering her mouth while doing so.

The Meltdown

‘Queens Karen,’ who apparently overheard the complaint made by her fellow customer, suddenly had a meltdown. A ‘Karen’ is a term used in social media for white women who are seen to act as someone with a great amount of entitlement. In a raging voice, she said: “You can’t say it to my face, you p—?!”

The victim, later identified as Ally Goodbaum, shouted back, “What the f–k is wrong with you?” At this point, the mask-less customer stomped over towards her and repeatedly coughed on her. A video acquired by TMZ showed the exchange, including the scene where ‘Queens Karen’ coughed on Goodbaum.

Incident Recounted

In a Facebook post on June 6, Goodbaum recounted the incident, expressing her disappointment with what is happening these days. “I know there are bigger problems in the nation right now but more and more it seems the people who are just trying to stand up for the right things are getting bulldozed by bullies,” Goodbaum’s post reads.

Social media users have identified ‘Queens Karen’ as a former worker at Weill Cornell Medicine’s research department. The New York Post reported that Weill Cornell issued a statement on Twitter saying that the woman had stopped working at their facility in January.
