Mel B has finally responded to her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte’s claims that she has alcohol and cocaine addiction. The former Spice Girls member broke her silence this week and maintained a strong front amid her legal battle with Belafonte.

On Thursday, Mel B (born Melanie Janine Brown) issued an exclusive statement to Entertainment Tonight to respond to her ex-husband’s accusations. “I have remained silent these past six months for the sake of my children,” she stated. Mel B did not directly deny Belafonte’s claims, but she did say that the truth will come out in court. “I refuse to be a victim any longer and trust the legal process to show the truth.

In the court papers Belafonte filed on Sept. 1, he claims that he feared for their children’s safety because the “America’s Got Talent” judge is allegedly battling alcoholism and drug addiction. Belafonte is the father of Mel B’s 6-year-old daughter Madison, and he has also acted as a father to the singer’s daughters from past relationships. Mel B has a 10-year-old daughter named Angel with actor Eddie Murphy, and she also has a teenage daughter named Phoenix with ex Jimmy Gulzar.

“The biggest reason for my concern with respect to the safety of the children was due to Petitioner’s (Brown) habitual and consistent addiction to and abuse of cocaine and alcohol,” Belafonte states in the legal documents. “I did not want Petitioner using drugs and drinking around the children, especially without anyone else present to care for the children.”

As indicated in the court papers, Belfonte claims Mel B “abruptly” took away the kids from him on March 19 and left their home. This happened just a day after they discussed to their kids their separation in the presence of Dr. Charles Sophy as an intermediary.

Belafonte has since asked for stepparent visitation with Angel, for he claims that the 10-year-old has known him as her dad ever since she learned to speak. “My intent and purpose behind my request for stepparent visitation with Angel is to ensure that Angel is alright and knows that I have not abandoned her,” the film producer states in the papers he filed in court.

Meanwhile, Mel B has also accused Belafonte of orchestrating a “sham marriage” with their former nanny, Lorraine Gilles. The scheme was allegedly to keep the German-born blonde from getting deported and in order for the two to continue their affair behind the celebrity’s back, TMZ reported citing legal docs from Mel B’s camp.

Mel B filed for divorce from Belafonte back in March. The two have been married for nearly 10 years. The singer and television personality has also obtained a restraining order against her estranged ex, after claiming that he had threatened and battered her throughout their married life.
