Two men in India were arrested while carrying a dead body, after their scooter veered off a highway, resulting in them falling off the vehicle.

The incident took place Wednesday night in the city of Bengaluru in the southern state of Karnataka. The two accused, identified only as Nagaraj and Vinod, were transporting the victim's body to a secluded place to get rid of it.

However, their plan bit the dust after the scooter met with an accident, resulting in them being nabbed by the cops, The Times of India reported.

The Ramanagara police told the media a passerby informed night patrolling deputies about the accident. When the police arrived at the spot, they found injured Nagaraj, 18, and Vinod, 23, standing next to the scooter with the body of the deceased, identified as Sowmya.

The police initially believed the woman died in the accident, and took three of them to a hospital. After examining the dead body, the doctors at the hospital determined she had died six hours ago.

The police then questioned Nagaraj and Vinod, following which they confessed Sowmya had been murdered. Nagaraj told the police his sister, Durga, and brother-in-law, Raghu, asked for his help in disposing of Sowmya's remains.

Nagaraj said he requested Vinod to assist him, and added they were heading to the town of Channapatna to dump the body when their scooter skidded.

The cops then arrested Durga, 22, her husband Raghu, 25, Nagaraj, and Vinod. All four are facing charges of murder and destroying evidence.

Sowmya and Durga were working as housekeeping staff at a marriage hall, Santosh Babu K., Superintendent of Police, Ramanagaram told The Hindu. Sowmya was reportedly staying with Durga and Raghu, who worked as a construction laborer. The police learned Sowmya allegedly stole some jewelry from Durga's house Monday and fled.

Durga searched for Sowmya and found her some hours later, following which the duo had a heated argument. Durga then allegedly attacked Sowmya with a club and locked her in a room in a severely injured state. When Raghu returned home from work, they reportedly found Sowmya dead. In fear of being caught, Durga asked for Nagaraj's help in disposing of the body.

The couple allegedly kept her body in the house till Tuesday, and made a plan to dump it in a lake or burn it in an isolated place, according to The Times of India.

The police are searching for a fifth person, Abhi, 20, who was on the run, according to The Hindu. However, Abhi's role in the murder was not revealed.
