KEY POINTS

  • The first "Metal Gear" was released in 1987 and the action-adventure franchise has spawned several games in the decades since
  • Despite the "Metal Gear Solid" movie being in development hell, its director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, took to Twitter to share concept art from the film to celebrate its anniversary
  • Series creator Hideo Kojima had a public split with Konami, but has given Vogt-Roberts his blessing if and when the motion picture pushes through

On the 33rd anniversary of the first “Metal Gear” game, the director of the upcoming “Metal Gear Solid” motion picture is sharing new concept art for the film every day this week.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts similarly celebrated the 31st anniversary of the game in 2018 when he posted a new piece of “Metal Gear Solid” concept art daily for 31 days.

The long-anticipated “Metal Gear Solid” film has been on the minds of many fans for what seems like an eternity but Vogt-Roberts himself has not been able to report any major progress in some time. Though he says he’s still in the fight to get the movie made, disruptions from COVID-19 have made it even more difficult than the already arduous process for making any big-budget Hollywood movie, ScreenRant notes.

The director says the script has been finished for years already, and it is likely that at least some stars are being considered to play critical roles. Oscar Isaac has previously indicated that he would like to play Solid Snake in the movie, an idea that Vogt-Roberts adamantly supports.

No less than “Metal Gear Solid” creator Hideo Kojima himself has given his blessing to the film project, a piece of news that’s sure to place the minds of fans at ease.

In spite of the stalled progress on the film, Vogt-Roberts has begun to post these new pieces of concept art on Twitter.

He started with a triptych by Tom Garden showing a trio of scenes from across the Metal Gear franchise, then followed it up today with a stunning piece by Eliant Elias showing the evolution of the Metal Gear weapons platform the series is based on. Vogt-Roberts says he’ll continue sharing concept art throughout the week, notes ScreenRant.

Following a very public split between Konami and Kojima, the studio kept the rights to the franchise, producing the poorly received spin-off “Metal Gear Survive” before letting the series lay dormant. There have been no updates on the film since, as Kojima has definitively stated that he’s not working on another game in the “Metal Gear” series.

Yet despite that lack of information, it’s clear from the art and Vogt-Roberts’ comments about them that the vision for the film is true to the games’ spirit, making this wait even more agonizing.

Metal Gear Solid 5
Could "Metal Gear Solid 5" and "Metal Gear Online" be the last of the Metal Gear franchise? Apparently publisher Konami is ceasing production of all AAA titles except for "Pro Evolution Soccer." Konami
