Less than a year following the massive success of "Squid Game," Netflix has released the first teaser of the series' much-awaited second season.

The eerie teaser, which was posted by the streaming giant on its official Twitter page Monday, features the dystopian drama's infamous motion-sensing doll, Young-hee, and the "Red Light, Green Light" song.

In the caption, Netflix wrote, "Red light… GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!"

In addition to the creepy 10-second teaser, Netflix also shared a message from "Squid Game" director, writer and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk.

In his message, Hwang confirmed the return of the show's beloved stars including Lee Jung-jae, who will be reprising his role as Gi Hun. Gong Yoo, whom Hwang referred to as "the man in the suit with ddakji" may also return. Consequently, a new character will be introduced in the series.

"A whole new round is coming," Hwang said in the clip. "It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for 'Squid Game' to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director and producer of 'Squid Game,' a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show."

"And now, Gi Hun returns," he continued. "The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su."

Since its release in September 2021, the show has gained unprecedented success and quickly became Netflix's biggest TV show ever. By October, the show had drawn 111 million fans worldwide and topped Netflix charts in more than 80 countries.

The hit series depicts a world of cash-strapped people who compete against each other in traditional children's games. The victor is awarded a hefty sum while the losers are killed by masked guards.

The show and its actors have won a slew of awards, including Best Male Performance for Lee at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards in March. Prior to this, its cast also made history by becoming the first Asians to receive trophies from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Earlier, Hwang said episodes for Season 2 may be ready for release by the end of 2023.
