Following an earlier leak, it has finally been confirmed that a new "Dragon Ball Super" movie is happening in 2022, with a load of details from the legendary mangaka himself, Akira Toriyama.

The official announcement of the second "Dragon Ball Super" movie happened during a special Goku Day celebration in Japan. Details are scarce about this new movie, but Toei Animation confirmed several details about it in a press release. Fans can expect that the upcoming film would feature an original story and character designs.

Additionally, the screenplay is penned by no other than the original series creator himself, Akira Toriyama. The new "Dragon Ball" movie is the second movie in the "Dragon Ball Super" series, following "Dragon Ball Super: Broly." The official "Dragon Ball" site revealed that planning for this particular movie started in 2018.

Toriyama developed the concept of the movie's story to make sure that it would be unlike in the history of the series. The legendary mangaka himself teased that while he could not give any specific details about the plot, fans should look forward to "some extreme and entertaining bouts" that may showcase an "unexpected character."

"An all-new movie since Dragon Ball Super: Broly is currently in the making!" Toriyama announced. "Just like the previous movie, I'm heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film. I really shouldn't talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character."

"We'll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!" the legendary mangaka said further.

The new "Dragon Ball Super" movie also teased that it would take the visual aesthetics of "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" to another level. "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" is one of the biggest movies of all time. In 2019, it was Funimation's biggest-ever U.S. box office opening. The movie raked in more than $120 million in the worldwide box office.

While the new movie in the series is finally happening, Toei Animation has not mentioned anything related to the sequel of "Dragon Ball Super" anime. The anime ended in March 2018 after airing 118 episodes.
