KEY POINTS

  • The New York Knicks are slight favorites to prevail over a Devin Booker-less Suns
  • Randle and Quickley need to step up for the Knicks with Barrett still unavailable and Brunson questionable
  • Landry Shamet and Chris Paul need to continue holding up the Suns' backcourt

The New York Knicks will try to pick up another win on Monday, January 2 when they host the injury-plagued Phoenix Suns at the Madison Square Garden with the tip-off set at 3:00 PM ET.

The two teams are coming off contrasting outcomes in their last assignments.

The Knicks got back on the winning track by visiting and defeating the Houston Rockets on Saturday, December 31.

Julius Randle dropped 35 points to go with 12 rebounds in that matchup, while Immanuel Quickley backed him up with 27 markers and seven dimes.

On the other end, the Suns are coming off two-straight losses, bowing to the Washington Wizards last Wednesday, December 28 and the Toronto Raptors on Friday, December 30.

Making it tougher for Phoenix is that they will have to play anew without their top star in Devin Booker.

The 26-year-old is expected to be out for at least four weeks due to a left groin strain.

With Booker out, Suns coach Monty Williams will have to push his other players to fill up the slack.

So far, Landry Shamet and Chris Paul have answered the call.

Shamet has averaged more than 20 points in the Suns' last five games, while Paul has also bumped up his numbers to average at least 16 points since December 10.

The Knicks also have missing players on their end.

RJ Barrett has been forced to the sidelines with a finger injury and will be reportedly out until Thursday, January 5.

Aside from the third overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, Jalen Brunson is also questionable after dealing with a hip injury.

In their absence, Randle and Quickley have stepped up for head coach Tom Thibodeau.

If New York can maintain their level of efficiency, the Knicks could bag their second-straight win and send the Suns reeling to their third-straight loss.

The Knicks hold a -1.5 spread against the Suns who tout with +1.5.

The game will be aired via NBA League Pass as well as live-streamed on fuboTV.
