A man in India was arrested after he allegedly killed his wife by pushing her from a moving train.

On Monday, the couple, who got married two months ago, was traveling in a local train along with the woman’s daughter from a previous marriage when the incident took place.

The 26-year-old woman, who was identified as Poonam Chavan, and her 31-year-old husband, Anwar Shaikh, were standing at the door of the train, and the man was holding his wife. However, when she leaned out of the locomotive, he released her from his grip, resulting in her falling on the tracks. The incident took place in the city of Mumbai.

As soon as the train stopped at the next station, a co-passenger who had witnessed the couple's activities, got down from the train and alerted the railway police, news agency PTI reported.

An officer immediately caught the accused and took him to the spot where he had let go of his wife. The victim was found lying injured and unconscious on the track. The officers rushed her to a local hospital where she was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.

The police were investigating to find the motive behind the crime. They were also verifying if the accused was under the influence of sedatives when the incident took place.

"There are no cameras on the tracks between the two stations so we have only the eyewitness account to bank on. We are trying to track down Chavan's relatives to inquire if her husband had been harassing her," a police officer told local daily The Times of India.

The man remained in custody as of Thursday and the victim's daughter was handed over to her family members.

The incident comes months after a man in the western Indian state of Maharashtra stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife and then killed himself by jumping before a train. Archana Durgande and Ganesh Durgande had a heated argument at their home following which the man stabbed her multiple times. He then fled the home and ran toward the railway station where he jumped in front of a train. In the meantime, the woman, who had severe stab injuries on her face, neck and abdomen, was taken to the hospital in a critical condition by neighbors.
