Nose masks are now an option for people that are looking for more protection against the coronavirus in instances where they have to fully remove their face masks.

The new COVID mask design was developed by a team of researchers in Mexico to specifically wear when eating, according to a video demonstration, as reported by Reuters.

In the video, a man and a woman show how the nose mask is worn under a traditional face mask, with the straps secured behind the ears and a covering placed over the nose. When the face mask is removed, the nose mask stays on, allowing the user to eat freely.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has condoned wearing two masks made of specific materials for protection against COVID-19 as it can significantly cut down on the spread of the virus, it is unclear whether the nose mask offers benefits.

However, Johns Hopkins University has said that nose coverings are important as human cells that give people a sense of smell are key points of entry for the virus, Fox News reported. The World Health Organization has also said that it recommends that people wear masks that cover their nose, mouth, and chin for the best protection against COVID-19.

The idea of the nose mask comes as some states ease up on their mask mandates and reduce restaurant capacity restrictions. Texas recently lifted its face mask requirement along with several other states.

The report from Reuters did not indicate when the nose masks would be made available to the public or provide the name of the company where they could be purchased from.
